American Airlines and US Airways

This year the parent company of American Airlines merged with US Airways. Yet another step towards the airline oligopoly, this now puts American Airlines as the largest airline in the world.

The match isn't a bad one in terms of routing, because unlike American, US Airways strength in some middle market hubs such as Philadelphia, Charlotte and Las Vegas nicely compliment American's powerful coastal majors such as LA, NY and Miami.

What is further interesting, is that US Airways actually has the experience of having become a disaster of an airline, going through bankruptcy, and coming out a nicer and leaner airline. US Airways was on it's way back up, with newer and cleaner equipment, and a simplified rate plan. American meanwhile, is still in it's adolescence of coming through the same process and although larger than US, is still earlier in the renewal process.
